Language, Language, Language

I'm struggling to recall the Spanish I learned in high school, all those many moons ago.  The people in my small town smile graciously when I murder the language.😀😀
Don't know about you but my days remembering how to diagram a sentence are long, long ago past.  Learning and using direct and indirect pronouns are absolutely necessary in Spanish.😕😕😕😕

My most recent language (other than English) is Indonesian.   It's great as I don't have to conjugate verbs!  Right now, the hardest part is searching my brain for the Spanish word.  When I can't dig it out of that particular brain section, my mouth just opens up and uses whatever word comes to mind. It could be English, French, Indonesian - whatever!  That's when I get the odd looks & smiles and think to myself, just a little bit better each and every day!

I just recently arrived from the US and I keep thinking of all the Americans who often say "they" should learn English when foreigners are in the States.  For the most part, I agree, especially as most Americans are language challenged themselves.  I also know how difficult it is to learn English as a second language.  So please explain to me why, in the many countries I've lived in and visited, I've often encountered Americans who refuse to learn their host country language?  These are often the very same people who espouse the belief that "they" should learn English.  The logic escapes me - go figure.
